6. Analysis of rock video 2

Architects - Alpha omega
During the intro to the song, the audience will be presented with a number of vague and mysterious images and shots. This is not unusual to have in a rock video and could be considered conventional. This is done for a number of reasons including, building suspense until the verse of the song begins, creating an atmosphere for the song or to hint a narrative to the audience.

As the song and video progresses the audience will notice that there's no clear narrative.
Furthermore, the audience will also notice that there aren't any shots of the band performing the song, there's only lip syncing in some parts of the video. This is unconventional for a rock video not to have a performance side, especially when there's strong instrumental elements in it. For example, the electric guitar is a clear, prominent feature throughout the song.

Furthermore, the audience could guess as to what the narrative is as the video continues. This can be hard to do due to the lack of clues or hints as well as very vague shots. This is considered unconventional of a rock video as there is often a clear narrative. However, there are subtle clues as to what the narrative is in the video. The audience will notice the man in the room being shocked and panicking when he wakes up. This could suggest he's been abducted.

The audience will also be able to notice the 'thing' with the microphone smoking the cigar is also telling him to do certain things, suggesting he's now a prisoner.

5. Analysis of rock video 1

King of Leon - Sex On Fire
The video starts with a number of close ups to show the character and lead singer. This is an attempt to reveal some sort of narrative to the audience. The shots give the audience the impression that this is what the man is looking at and that the camera is from his perspective.

Also, the low key lighting and unusual objects in each shot further suggest a narrative within the video and follows elements of Andrew Goodwin's theory of editing. This is also a typical feature of a rock music video, as it gives the audience a sense of mystery and suspense.

These shots show the band performing, a typical feature of a rock video. They not only show the band performing but also the singer lip syncing, a crucial component in any music video.

The use of these quick jump cuts matches the speed and style of the song. Quick jump cuts are often used in rock music videos and could be considered a typical feature of a rock music video.

Also, the audience will also notice that there is only one location used to film this video, a dark room with bare concrete walls. This could is conventional and is a common feature in a lot of rock videos.

3. Analysis of pop video 2

Gotye - Somebody That I used To Know
The beginning shot pans up the mans body until it reaches his face. He looks up as he starts to sing. The camera focusses on his face for the first part of the music video.

The camera pans out slowly to uncover a woman to the audience. This long shot represents two sides to the argument, the vague narrative in this video. The use of long shots is a typical convention of any music video.

Although there isn't any real narrative, the video acts as an argument between two people and the lyrics in the song describe what's happened. This is reinforced by both people lip syncing within the video to give the audience the impression that they're both giving their opinion on what happened between them. A narrative in a music video is a common feature and is often conventional.

Furthermore, as the video progresses, the audience will notice both the wall and people being painted in sections. This could be some sort of representation to their relationship. However, this is an usual feature in a pop music video as there isn't a representation of something. This is unconventional of a pop music video but more conventional of an Indie music video. In addition, this video mainly follows the themes of Andrew Goodwins Amplification and disjuncture elements of his theory.

Furthermore, there aren't any shots of a band performing or any hint of  performance side to the video. This is unconventional of any music video.

2. Analysis of pop video 1

Katy Perry - Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)
A long shot is presented to show Katy Perry's character waking up in her bedroom surrounded by confetti, ribbons and reminders of the night before.
This is one of the few long shots used in the video and this acts as an establishing shot for the video. This shot also sets a scene for the video as well as showing what her character is wearing for part of the video.

A variety of shots show the band performing within the music video, they're mainly mid shots and close ups. Most pop videos will show a band performing, meaning it's also an important feature. Furthermore, Within these shots it shows a number of people dancing, what they're wearing and where they are. These are all important factors in creating a music video.

As the video progresses the audience will notice a narrative emerging. These are used in most pop videos and it's a way of not only attracting an audience but also to include various features within the video, such as locations, clothing, props, editing techniques, effects and lip syncing. All of which are important factors to have in a pop video.

This is when the narrative begins as her character goes to the door of the party.

As she get inside the party, she sees people dancing and enjoying themselves, she immediately goes up stairs to change and join the party.

The audience can now see she's changed and is now joining the party.

This animation shows the use of of a cut away as well as montage editing. This can be common in pop videos as there's usually a narrative within the video and by using montage editing, you can add in cut aways to better explain the story line.

In The Sun recreation video

1. Brief

As part of our media A2 course, we will be developing a music video. However, before we do this we will be creating a blog showing research and planning posts. this will include any ideas we have for our song and artist as well as any ideas for a narrative. Also, we will be analysing a number of music videos from our chosen genre to find typical conventions from that genre and include them in our work.
